Oral Cancer Awareness Month

April 27, 2023

April is oral cancer awareness month. Over 54,000 people in America alone will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year. Worldwide, this issue is much greater, with there being over 450,000 new cases found every year.

Let’s learn about some risk factors:

  • Tobacco use of any kind. This includes pipes, cigars, cigarettes, vapes, chewing tobacco, and much more.
  • Substantial alcohol use.
  • Excessive sun exposure to your lips.
  • The sexually transmitted disease called Human Papillomavirus, also known as HPV.
  • A weakened immune system.

How can you reduce the risk of obtaining oral cancer?:

  • Say no to any tobacco use, or quit if you are already using.
  • Drink alcohol in moderation, if at all.
  • Avoid heavy sun exposure to your lips, and make sure that you’re wearing an SPF lip balm if you are outdoors for long periods of time.
  • Visit your Park Dental dentist regularly!

We hope that these few facts and tips have helped you become more aware about oral cancer. Please know that we are here to help you at Park Dental! Call your local practice today to visit one of our dentists.
