Healthy Smiles Start Early

Excellent care from your child’s dentist is the standard at Park Dental. Our team members will help make your child’s first dental appointment a great experience. With dozens of practices across the Twin Cities, greater Minnesota and Western Wisconsin, Park Dental provides individualized care close to you.

When to see the dentist

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends seeing a dentist after a child gets their first tooth or around their first birthday.

As soon as teeth appear, they are at risk for cavities. Seeing the dentist early and frequently as recommended by your dentist helps keep your child’s teeth healthy for a lifetime. Guidance may vary depending on your child’s oral health needs. After your child’s first appointment, the dentist will help you decide how frequently to schedule checkups.

Aside from regular check-ups, see a dentist if a child complains of mouth or jaw pain, shows signs of tooth decay, has mouth sores or experiences problems with their gums.

Prepare for the First Appointment

A parent and child can prepare for a first dental appointment together. When you’re both prepared, it can help relieve anxiety. Park Dental recommends the following tips to prep for a first appointment:

Schedule Around Nap Time
Try to schedule your child’s appointment when they’ll be awake and in the best mood possible.
Make a List of Questions
If you have any questions about your child’s oral care or dental services, prepare a list of questions to ask during the appointment.
Talk About What to Expect
Talk with your child about what to expect in a positive way. Have them practice opening their mouth or try counting teeth together to mimic what the dentist will do.
Fill Out Paperwork Before You Arrive
If this is your first visit to Park Dental, complete the online new patient registration prior to your visit to save time.
Read Books or Watch Videos
Children’s books or videos about visiting the dentist may help them understand what to expect and get excited.

What to Expect at a First Appointment

Team members at Park Dental will work with you and your child to help the first appointment go smoothly. Depending on your child’s age and comfort level, they’ll sit in your lap or in the dental chair.

During the exam, your child’s dentist will check that their jaw and any teeth are developing correctly. The dentist is looking for cavities, injuries to the mouth or other dental issues. Your child may also receive a dental cleaning, depending on their age. The dentist will answer any questions and make suggestions for maintaining your child’s oral hygiene.

Why do some doctors not have a star rating or comments?

In order to provide our patients with the most accurate and beneficial information, we only post star ratings and comments for a doctor once they have received a minimum of 30 surveys within the previous 12 months.
